The Apple Watch 2 undoubtedly topped many wish lists this holiday season, but that hasn’t stopped people from talking about what’s next from the tech giant. Most of this chatter stems from patents suggesting that Apple is working on major design changes for its future smartwatches. Here’s what we know so far:
Apple Watch 3 Design
Apple’s second-generation smartwatch adopted the rectangular design of the original, but patent applications suggest that the company is, at the very least, looking into a circular, more traditional watch face.
According to Apple Insider, the company was investigating non-rectangular device designs as early as December 2015. These findings don’t guarantee Apple will introduce a circular display in the near future, but it’s encouraging news for those who prefer classic designs over the condensed look of a smartphone.
It’s no secret that Apple likes to make new tech slimmer than previous models, but the company might achieve that differently with its third-generation smartwatch. The same patents show evidence that Apple is trying to move the haptic motor to the wristband, which would reduce thickness in the watch’s body. This is an interesting change, considering the Apple Watch 2 was thicker than the original to accommodate extra hardware.
Apple Watch 3 Release Date
The rumors might be fresh, but the Apple Watch 3 won’t be introduced anytime soon. There was a 17-month gap between the release of the original Apple Watch (April 2015) and the release of the Apple Watch 2 (September 2016), so the best we can hope for is a mid to year-end release for the company’s third-generation smartwatch.
Apple Watch 3 Price
Because the newest Apple smartwatch is likely months away from being released, we can only speculate on its potential price. But based on the previous models, we can make an educated guess. The original Apple Watch started at $299, while the Apple Watch 2 started at $369. It’s safe to assume Apple’s third-generation smartwatch will start at $399 or more.
